After the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans, the modern Diaspora took place, scattering the Jewish population throughout the world, but especially into Europe (the Ashkenazi[ wp ]), Mesopotamia, and North Africa[ wp ]. Kavanah (kavanot, pl.)--"intention" or "devotion," the intention directed towards God while performing a religious activity; in the Kabbalah, kavvanot are the permutations of the divine name that aim at overcoming the separation of forces in the upper world; these are chanted meditatively like mantras; optimally, this meditative chanting culminates in hitpashtut hagashmiut, a divestment of the sense of the physical and realization of the spiritual.

He was born in Spain in 1135, lived most of his life in Egypt, and died there in 1185. As for the Jews of Asia Minor, whose large numbers were mentioned by Cicero (106–43 bce), their not joining in the Jewish revolts against the Roman emperors Nero (reigned 54–68 ce), Trajan (reigned 98–117), and Hadrian (reigned 117–138) would indicate that they had sunk deep roots into their environment. They are generally pro-Israel and try to visit the Jewish state as often as possible. Furthermore, each period of Jewish history has left behind it a specific element of a Judaic heritage that continued to influence subsequent developments, so that the total Jewish heritage at any given time is a combination of all these successive elements along with whatever adjustments and accretions have occurred in each new age.

Judaism attempts to bring holiness down to everyday life - and to bring every day life up toward holiness. In the earliest stages of a Jewish settlement, men of learning were not to be found, but after having consolidated itself economically, a particular community usually attracted scholars from other, longer-established Jewish communities in the Diaspora. First, scientific learning was cultivated only by Jews in Mediterranean communities of Spain, Southern France, Italy, and North-Africa but did not penetrate the Jewish communities north of the Alps.
