Otherwise known as ESO 540-22, LEDA 2758 or UGCA 11, this galaxy is a member of the Sculptor Group, a collection of galaxies that also contains the more famous Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253). Laplace considers astronomy a science of observation, because we can only observe the movements of the planets; we cannot reach them, indeed, to alter their course and to experiment with them. On earth, said Laplace, we make phenomena vary by experiments; in the sky, we carefully define all the phenomena presented to us by celestial motion. Certain physicians call medicine a science of observations, because they wrongly think that experimentation is inapplicable to it.

Previous recipients of the Bruce Medal include Giovanni V. He described these as like chariot wheels; the rims were hollow and filled with fire, and the light from the heavenly bodies emanated from openings in these wheels, which allowed people to see the fire. Such conditions occur in very powerful sources such as quasars, active galactic nuclei and supernova remnants, the remains of massive stars that have exploded.

The unused propellant from this event provides more fuel margin for the spacecraft’s asteroid proximity operations once OSIRIS-REx arrives at Bennu. Research Astronomy/ Astrophysics is in a golden era at present, with many fundamental discoveries (e.g., dark energy, dark matter, black holes, extrasolar planets) shaping our understanding of the size and future of the universe, and of our place in the universe.
