Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us—there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, or falling from a height. The site is very easy to navigate and the information is in digestible chunks. The spacecraft New Horizons passes by Pluto on July 14, 2015, and comes within 7,800 miles of its surface, its closest flyby. A belt of asteroids (minor planets made of rock and metal) lies between Mars and Jupiter.

Most asteroids can be found in a belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Astronomy was particularly appealing because it addressed some of the most basic questions of who, what, and where we are [in the universe]. Gleiser, Marcelo The Dancing Universe: From Creation Myths to the Big Bang. 1997, Dutton/Penguin. Rey (For fun!), ISBN 0618120696. Armed with an 8.4-meter (27-foot) optical telescope and a 3,200-megapixel camera—the world’s largest—the LSST will record as much data in a couple of nights as the Sloan Survey did in eight years. “For the first time, we’re going to have more astronomical objects cataloged in a coherent survey than there are people on Earth,” says Simon Krughoff, a member of the LSST data management team. (For those keeping score at home, experts project 20 billion objects.) The numbers are so big and daunting that the LSST is the first astronomical project ever to formally incorporate informatics into its design architecture. “I made the case that we needed a group focused on data mining, machine learning, and visualization research to involve not just astronomers but also computer scientists and statisticians,” says Kirk Borne, who chairs the informatics and statistics team.

Maui International Science Education Conference, January 2-5, 2017, Maui, Hawai'i. In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. Tuesday October 30 7:00 p.m. But in the beginning, Goldin's methods seemed to deliver: the first missions using the approach were wildly successful.

Remove them to a distance of a few billion light years and they’re faint. The numbers relevant to calculating an answer are Hubble’s constant (i.e., the current expansion rate), the density of matter in the universe, and the cosmological constant, which allows for change in the expansion rate. Have each page of the booklet be one phase, and have the students add a small white paper square to each page with how they know it's the waning cresecent, for example; less than half lit, light on the left. (NOTE: See my What Moon Phases Is This?

Thursday June 30 7:00 p.m. S., Germany, Chile, the Netherlands, Italy, South Korea and the United Kingdom contributed to the paper, and many will be part of the next effort at ALMA to gather information from 20 known Protostars with similar properties. In fact, New Horizons found that Pluto's interaction with the solar wind is much more like the interaction of the solar wind with Mars, than with a comet.
